Interior designer or decorator? What Dress Your Home actually does on a project

Dress Your Home does both kinds of work, from selections on a build to hanging the art at install. Here's how to tell what your project needs.

Interior designer vs decorator is a choice you don't have to make at Dress Your Home, because the studio does both kinds of work. It makes the selections while a house is being built or remodeled, and it handles the furnishings and styling that come last. Its Kitchen, Bath & Architectural Selections service covers tile, stone, hardware and lighting, plus flooring and appliance selection. The studio is also on site for installs. What's left to work out is how much of that your own project needs.

One Colleyville studio, three service groups

Dress Your Home is a full-service interior design studio based in Colleyville, and it serves a 30-mile radius across DFW. It sorts its services into three groups. Whole-Home Design takes in new builds and remodels as well as a refresh. The selections service named above is the second group. Refresh, Furnishings & Styling includes color consultation and window coverings, and it reaches as far as florals and exterior paint.

If you can't tell which group your house belongs in, tell us about your home and describe the project to the studio as it stands today.

When the house is under construction

Dress Your Home has taken on kitchen and bathroom renovations in a Colleyville home, where it also turned the existing dining room into a wine room. In that house the studio created a new primary bedroom, along with a dining room and a living space.

A five-star Google review of Dress Your Home came from a couple whose home needed significant updates. They wrote that Veronica brought a clear vision and plan. One line of the review reads "She worked closely with the contractors." On a new build the studio joins the architect and builder conversation early, on millwork heights and lighting plans. The rest of that process is in the article on how a whole-home selection project works.

Why the floor gets chosen before the sofa

Dress Your Home makes selections room by room in a set order. Hard finishes come first: flooring, cabinetry, counters, tile, plumbing, lighting. Soft finishes are second, and wall color belongs there along with drapery and rugs. Furniture and accessories are last. The studio keeps to that sequence because a sofa picked before the floor is settled can turn out not to work in the room.

Before any material is chosen, the studio plans two to four conversations over about two weeks. It asks how the family cooks and what sits on the bathroom counter.

On a refresh, the job is furnishing and styling

One Dress Your Home client thought her bookshelves needed more decor. According to her Google review, Veronica removed some of the shelves instead and simplified the ones she kept. Veronica also walked through the home and rearranged pieces. The review says the space felt fresh using what the client already owned. In its reply, the studio wrote that the home already had all the bones and needed fresh eyes.

A North Richland Hills home

Dress Your Home redesigned a North Richland Hills homeowner's office, living room, kitchen, dining room and formal living room. Her review says the rooms were pulled together into a cohesive look that flows through the house, and it calls the studio organized and wonderful to shop with.

An office and a backyard in Southlake

In a new Southlake home, Dress Your Home created a memory room and home office that holds the family's mementos in one place, separated by year. The same clients then asked the studio to return for the backyard, where it designed an outdoor living space and the pool area.

At install, the studio is in the room

At install, Dress Your Home hangs the art and arranges the bookshelves, down to swapping out the wrong throw pillow. Ahead of that day it tracks the orders and follows up with vendors when ship dates slip. It coordinates the install sequence with the builder.

Veronica works hands-on and follows each project to completion. Before going out on her own she interned for five years under the president of the Interior Design Society.

Tell the studio which kind of work your project involves

To settle the designer or decorator question for your own house, send a few details about your project. Say whether it involves construction and selections, or furnishing and styling rooms that are already built, and name the service group above that sounds closest. Dress Your Home follows up within one business day to schedule a conversation.
