How to make an older home feel modern without gutting it

Why we pick paint and lighting for an older home, a master suite we updated, and what an update like this costs and takes.

If you want an older home to feel modern without gutting it, Dress Your Home's answer is paint and lighting, the two changes we pick as making an older home feel newest for the money. We have also seen how much fresh paint and flooring can do for a room. An update like this takes about two weeks. Dress Your Home works out of Colleyville as a full-service studio and takes on homes within a 30-mile radius across DFW (more on interior design in Colleyville).

On the studio's own service list, color consultation sits in the Refresh, Furnishings & Styling group, and lighting is one of the selections in its Kitchen, Bath & Architectural Selections group.

A master suite we updated

Recently we updated a master suite, re-texturing the walls to an imperfect smooth finish and then giving them a fresh coat of paint in a soft greige. On that job, beyond the paint, we simply changed the finishes, and the room was updated in short order.

If one of your rooms sounds similar, tell us about your home and mention the finishes you're weighing.

Why we work in this order

Because the ceilings in that master suite were a bit lower, we painted the trim and the walls the same color.

When we make selections room by room, we choose the hard finishes first, which means the flooring, cabinetry and counters along with tile, plumbing and lighting. Wall color, drapery and rugs follow as soft finishes, and furniture and accessories come last, because a sofa chosen before the floor is settled can end up not working in the room. You'll find the full sequence in how a whole-home selection project works.

In our experience, most people never complete a project, and they end up dissatisfied with the room or with their home. Our greatest advice is to build a master plan and complete one area. Putting a second set of eyes on a project pays off too.

What an update like this costs

We put the average price for an update like this at about $15,000, and the price can swing significantly depending on the finishes and flooring you choose. A Colleyville client's Google review says Veronica has done multiple projects in the home and works within budget, balancing high-end items with moderately priced ones. The studio's view is that honoring a client often means honoring the budget.

What new finishes did in two of our rooms

In this photo of our Roseville Kitchen project, soft gray cabinetry, honed quartz and a clean backsplash took the place of heavy Tuscan finishes.

In our Calloway Dining project, the heavy ornament was removed and the room took on clean lines and a calmer palette.

A Google review of the studio describes Veronica transforming a once-dated home into one that is modern and inviting. For more of the studio's rooms, browse our portfolio.

Sometimes the house already has the bones

According to one client's Google review, she expected her bookshelves to need more decor. Veronica took some of the shelves out and pared back the rest. She also moved pieces around the house that had gone visually stagnant, working with things the client already owned. The studio's reply said the home had all the bones already and just needed fresh eyes.

Our renovation work in a Colleyville home

In one client's Colleyville home, we have worked on kitchen and bathroom renovations and converted the existing dining room to a wine room. In that same house we also created a new primary bedroom for them, along with a new dining room and living space. In July we wrote that the renovations there would keep going through late summer and on into fall 2026.

Next step: send us the room you want to update

For a dated room in an older house, send a few details about your project and tell us which room it is and the finishes you're considering. We'll get back to you within one business day to set up a conversation.
